Bettas love live food such as brine shrimp, daphnia, worm or mosquito larvae. In Tropical countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and China, bettas survive by eating mostly mosquito larvae. You can find mosquito larvae almost anywhere in Asia simply because the tropical weather and rainy season make it a perfect region for mosquitos to live. If flakes or pellet food is fed, it should be supplemented with freeze dried, frozen or live foods.
You can find live brine shrimp, worm and mosquito larvae sometimes in some of your local petstores. If not then you can find them frozen in PetSmart or PetCo.
