The illustration below will teach you to recognize the different body parts on a betta. It is important that you know what they are because it one of the first steps in getting to know your betta. Don't you want to sound like an expert at what you do?
Identifying different betta body parts is easy but to tell the difference between a male and a female is quite difficult for beginners and even sometimes for seasoned breeders when bettas are small. The picture below will show you the difference between a mature male and female betta. The one on the left is the female and the one on the right is the male.
As you can see the male is more colorful and has bigger and wider tails and fins. The female is less colorful (not always true in some bettas) and has shorter and smaller tails and fins. The one thing that really seperates the male from the female is the female's bigger faint yellow colored stomach and white/yellow dot at the bottom which is the ovipostior, or the egg tube. When female bettas are young and small, it is quite difficult to locate the ovipositor but as the female get older, the ovipositor will become bigger and easier to locate.
